CEREBRAL PALSY
STATISTICS
In the United States, it is estimated that between 500,000 and
700,000 individuals have one or more of the symptoms of cerebral
palsy. Annually, it is estimated that 5000 babies and infants are
diagnosed with cerebral palsy and an additional 1,500 pre-school
age children acquire the condition.
PREVENTION
Cerebral palsy can be prevented in certain circumstances. One of
the most important factors in its prevention is proper prenatal
care. Pregnant women should be under a physician's care throughout
the pregnancy and should be tested routinely for Rh factor. In addition,
medical conditions such as diabetes and anemia should be monitored
and controlled. Proper nutrition, and in some instances medication,
can be used to prevent and cure viruses and infections. Finally,
all care should be taken in protecting pregnant women and infants
from accidents or injury.
