FETAL DISTRESS
 |
Fetal Distress is a condition that, if allowed to persist, may
lead to permanent damage or to perinatal death. Like any human being,
a fetus needs oxygen. Its source of oxygen is the mother's blood
carried to it through the placenta and umbilical cord. Most fetal
distress is associated with a disruption of maternal blood flow
to the fetus. The lack of maternal blood results in a reduction
of oxygen, which if not promptly corrected causes fetal hypoxia
and brain damage. Timely diagnosis of fetal distress allows the
distress to be remedied by treating the underlying cause ("intrauterine
resuscitation") or by prompt delivery of the fetus ("rescue"). Fetal
distress is a state that rapidly deteriorates to a lethal condition.
The failure to timely diagnosis, or the failure to take prompt remedial
action, can cause severe injuries to the fetus. Parents are often
left with the incorrect impression that their child has a birth
defect that could not have been avoided, when in truth, the baby
suffered injury due to medical malpractice. The medical records
must be closely reviewed by a medical malpractice attorney and consulting
expert witness to determine the actual cause of the baby's condition.
