PREECLAMPSIA & HELLP
SYNDROME
STATISTICS
Preeclampsia complicates five to ten percent of all pregnancies
in America. Up to twenty percent of pregnant women suffering preeclampsia
develop HELLP syndrome. The mortality rate is one to three percent
in these patients. The risk is higher for first time pregnant mothers,
and women with pre-existing high blood pressure.
PREVENTION
The cause of both preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome is unknown. Early
detection through proper prenatal care is the best prevention to
developing a serious problem. Healthy mothers, with healthy diets,
following the instructions of their attending doctor are at lower
risk.
TREATMENT
Early stages of preeclampsia can be treated with bedrest, high-protein
diet, and mild sedatives. Severe cases require hospitalization,
IV magnesium sulfate, and strict bed rest laying on the left side.
Delivery of the baby is the only real treatment for eclampsia and
HELLP. The mother will require post-delivery hospitalization, blood
and fluid transfusions, magnesium sulfate, and blood pressure control
medication.
