DELIVERY INJURIES
A child can suffer a variety of injuries when extreme measures
are used to remove the baby from the birth canal. During difficult
and prolonged deliveries, instruments such as vacuum extractors
and forceps may be used to force the delivery of the child. If used
improperly, these instruments may cause the child to suffer a skull
fracture, spinal cord injury, Brachial Plexus injury, or injury
to other parts of the body. In some cases, a child's head injury
may result in impaired mental or physical functions, as well as
facial disfigurement.
Another frequent problem arises from the decision to have a vaginal
delivery after having had a prior cesarean section delivery. This
decision can lead to catastrophic results if the delivery is not
closely monitored. A rupture of the uterus can place the life of
both the mother and baby at extreme risk. The pressure on the uterus
from negligently allowed prolonged labor is the primary cause of
rupture.
Most parents have no way of knowing if they and/or their baby suffered
injury as a result of medical negligence, or an unavoidable inherent
risk.
