ARTERIOSCLEROSIS
Arteriosclerosis is the leading cause of death and serious disability
in the United States. It is a disease of the arterial vessels which
causes a thickening, hardening, and loss of elasticity in the arterial
walls, resulting in a decreased blood flow through the heart. The
cause of arteriosclerosis is unknown. The risk factors include age,
family history, sedentary lifestyle, hypertension, high cholesterol,
obesity, cigarette smoking, diabetes, and the inability to cope
with stress. Currently, males are at a much higher grade of risk
than females, but females are having an increasing problem with
the disease. Symptoms may include change in skin temperature, change
in intensity of the pulse, headache, dizziness, and memory defects.
Treatment includes regular exercise, a diet low in saturated fats,
abstaining from the use of tobacco, general moderation in all things
to reduce stress, and medical treatment for hypertension, diabetes,
and obesity.
