COLON CANCER
 |
It is estimated that 131,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colon
and rectal cancer this year. Fortunately, with early detection,
the odds of beating colon and rectal cancer go up significantly.
If treatment is delayed, the patient may need much more extensive
surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy than they might otherwise
have needed. Additionally, delay in diagnosis or treatment can reduce
the patient's chances of survival and may ultimately be the difference
between life and death. Symptoms of colon or rectal cancer include
a change in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation or stool consistency
changes), rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort
(such as cramps, gas or pain or a feeling that your bowel does not
completely empty), sudden, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite
or constant fatigue. Factors that make you more at risk are a personal
or family history of colorectal polyps or cancer, a low-fiber/high-fat
diet, obesity, an inactive lifestyle and long-standing inflammatory
diseases. Techniques currently available for early diagnosis of
colorectal cancer include digital rectal screening, fecal occult
blood testing, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colon x-ray and colonoscopy.
If a medical mistake was made, you might have a valid claim and
be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
